MoRM – Museum of Random Memories, Counterplay Book Abstract

“An unusual museum

Departing from a quick brainstorm about future memories the concept of a museum of forgotten or random objects surfaced. Through a playful process which in many ways bore resemblance to devised theatre The Museum of Random Memories was both contemplated, organized, realized, opened and documented on location. The set-up included both a grand opening and a session of (dis)-preservation. The concept played with a contrapuntal strategy in which guests and “canvassed” participants were invited to share a random idea, a random image from their smartphone or a random object. The shared conglomerate was then thoroughly annotated, aestheticized in different ways and displaced momentarily with the promise of being subsequently annihilated hours later. The temporality and the destruction of materials run counter to the praxis of preserving cultural heritage associated with museums, placing the participants in a playful position of exhibiting and sharing, while simultaneously forgetting or letting go.”
